Every good fight needs a good team. The fight to make cancer a national priority is no exception. The volunteers at Livestrong Greater Hartford Area take the fight on cancer to our local community in an effort to support The Lance Armstrong Foundation's fight at the Global level. WE support cancer awareness and fundraising events of any type as well as personal support to those who are fighting for their lives. WE use whatever resources we can come up with to plan multiple events to raise funds for the LAF as well as for any cancer group in our community that needs our help. "BE THE CHANGE YOU WISH WOULD HAPPEN"
Cancer will impact one in two men and one in three women in their lifetime. It is devastating and it is pervasive. In fact, every year, 1.3 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer. Despite improved detection and treatment, 1,500 people will die from cancer today and tomorrow and the day after that, often because the care they needed to prevent cancer or survive it was not available to them. It is time to ask our government leaders how they intend to address this crisis and then hold them accountable to their proposals. It is time to marshal our collective will, our passion, our outrage, our insistence and our voices.
The LAF has identified 4 strategies that they believe, taken together, can eliminate suffering and death due to cancer.
- We must provide access to quality cancer care for everyone.
- We must improve the quality of life for people affected by cancer.
- We must manage cancer through prevention, early detection, planning and data collection, with an emphasis on survivorship.
- We must invest in and align research with health outcomes.
Tackling these strategies is not a task that one group can take on alone. It will take the moral will and sacrifice of the scientific community, health care providers, public health practitioners, private industry, patient advocates, policymakers in Congress and the White House and YOU.
